Beyond: An Interview with Maskarus

I read a book this week, but it was sort of one of those books that can’t really be reviewed? You know what I mean? A guilty pleasure? One of those that you are just embarrassed if anyone finds out you’ve been reading that kind of smack? So instead of doing my weekly book review, I am going to try something a little different this week and talk about how the creative process works for me.

Why do I write? Because if I didn’t, I’d be really sad.  I have to write, I need to write. I get a backup of
characters that appear in my head and they start interacting with each other.  They are living a life of their own and causing havoc in my brain. I can almost smell them they are so close. In fact, it’s hard for me to believe you can’t see them. I don’t know what they want with each other at first, and that’s what I find out through the process of writing.

Flashes of these characters and their entourages come up all the time.  And although I cannot share some of it with you (because most of them right now are in my idea book waiting to come out in story) I can share about the ones that have already been written.

I am doing a very short interview of a beloved fictional character from one of my past projects.

Here’s Maskarus from Mask Mystery Theatre: He wears a top hat, tails and a monocle.

7NB: Mr. Maskarus, where did you say you were from?

Maskarus: I was born in eighteen fifty. London.  I’ve no idea what time or day it is.  Would you like some tea?  Is that a bird on the window? What color did you say noon was?

7NB: Thank you, Mr. Maskarus, I’m more of a coffee person.  But you go ahead.

Maskarus: Certainly and thank you, I shall. Messmaker will be here soon and she’ll just fly her top if I’ve not filled her chalice.

7NB: Now, what’s the deal with the Messmaker? Who is she exactly?

Maskarus: Ahh, yes, my darling and dearest Messmaker.  (Maskarus sighs as he pours himself a cup of tea). Messmaker is my dearest friend in the world.  I met her in 1922 at the Hialeah Horse track.  She thinks she can stop time.  It’s really quiet comical. A tea toddler, that one.

7NB: You guys are aware it is 2010…right?

Maskarus: Is it really? Heavens.  Where did the time go? I wonder if Ebert knows…

7NB: How come you’re not dead?

Maskarus: I didn’t know I was supposed to.  Besides, isn’t that death business messy?  It sounds messy. Am I wrong in assuming that?

7NB: Is it true you walked barefoot to the local University?

Maskarus: Only across the way.  I was recreating Abbey Road. You are familiar with the works of Sir Paul McCartney?

7NB: What’s a typical day like for you?

Maskarus: Messmaker will come to my flat at precisely 3:17 in the afternoon.  Of course, I have to hide Ebert, my monkey. She is deathly afraid of anything with hands and feet alike. My darling Messmaker will then go on and on about Clamhands, our tedious next door neighbor, for exactly one hundred and seventy five minutes.

7NB: Wow, what happens after she’s done talking about Clamhands?

Maskarus: Oh dear.  She will carry on about the Funmaker – my other next door neighbor and possibly the dullest human being alive.
